Nice things to do after leaving:
-
Get new
business cards
- You really shouldn't keep giving out your old Microsoft business
cards when you meet people after you have left Microsoft.
Besides the phone number and email
addresses are wrong! This is your chance to create your own
card and make up your own title without requiring your managers
approval! (mine say instigator)
vistaprint.com
offers high quality cards at a very low price:
FREE ($5.95 shipping and handling for 250 cards) and
LeavingMicrosoft.com gets a small
kickback. Whats not to like?
-
Sign up for MSA - A not so well known service is
the Microsoft Alumni Net. For $100 a year you are entitled to purchase $200
of discounted software at the company store, receive $100 of the $200 ProClub
transfer fee back, get group health insurance, read the MicroNews, and hobnob
with other ex-Microsoft folk. It is worth it just for the company store access.
The only issue I have with these folk is that the dues are not pro-rated (their
year runs July 1st to June 30th).
-
Move your 401K account to an IRA - By law Microsoft needs to continue to
hold your account, however it is much more flexible to move to an IRA. I think
you can even move the shares in-kind but I haven't attempted this yet.
-
Find balance in your life - I suggest yoga! On the east side
you can join me at
Yoga Centers in Bellevue, or in Fremont
I suggest Yoga Tree. Dancing is another
great way to get in touch with your body and the opposite sex you were missing
during all those Microsoft all-nighters; I suggest trying
Tim Hickey's Dance Studio in Kirkland.
